Bolivian Rural Workers Back Road Construction

Prensa Latina, 07-September-2011: The Bolivian Rural Workers Union (CSUTCB) on Wednesday joined hundreds of other organizations in supporting the construction of a road joining eastern and western Bolivia.
Alejandro Peredo, one of the union's leaders in Cochabamba, said on a state television that unlike the indigenous group in the east that is protesting the road, he believes the highway would bring more integration and development.
Meanwhile, Hydrocarbon Minister Jose Luis Gutierrez said in a telephone conversation with the ATB network that the governmental commission created in the Amazonian city of San Borja wants to negotiate to resolve the conflict.
Asked about the marchers' demands for the direct intervention of President Evo Morales, Gutierrez said that the goal was to try to reach an agreement through talks first.
Many government ministers, including the ministers of the the presidency, public works, development and justice are in San Borja for that purpose, he said.
Gutierrez refuted reports that inhabitants of the neighboring town of Yucumo had set up barricades and trenches to hinder the march and create confrontations.
